Facebook Tagging – Digital Tagging

TAG!!! You're IT!!!

by Paul Crowson

You and I can rest easy and sleep at night, knowing your kids won’t be mistaken in the Facebook lineup at the city jail and tagged!

Facebook and Google have been playing tag with your kids faces … perfecting online facial recognition.

Do you want to play the game?

Ready or not…here it comes!

Your kids are great at it, racing home from school every day to see who tagged whom, who was at the party, who missed out. Now if a friend uploads a new group photo, Facebook sends it to their friends to find out who knows who online.

It’s no big deal according to Larry Magid of the Huffington Post, who wrote an article about Facebook's Face Recognition Photo Tagging Service.

But the comments and research done in this article do not take into account the enthusiasm kids have for sharing their photos online. Facebook estimates over 100 million photos a day are posted on their platform.

Parents need to think about that impact on their kids, just how engaging the photo-sharing aspect of Facebook is.

Facebook is a master at engaging, so since they have decided to roll out this facial recognition, we gotta ask a question, "How do we manage in that willing and engaging community the fact that our kids faces and their reputations can be spread around the world in a matter of minutes?"

Digital Shepherds says don’t freak out, they list five easy steps to keep everything private and check it once a month!

We say, here at KidZafe, that once a month is not nearly often enough, it's too complicated, it's too risky, it is much easier to engage the smart tools, to filter the world wide web before it gets to your kids and do it in real time, for their sakes!

The face recognition technology is not new, it has been around for a while … meaning more than a year. (Used to be when you said “it’s been around for a while" you meant many years … not so any longer!!

I found out it is embedded in my own computer's hard drive. The video and photo software that creates my own albums and movies, also recognizes the faces when you start putting names to them, and continues to prompt you by asking you about other pictures in the slide show…”is this the same person as the last photo”?

Digital progress is now measured daily, and therefore it is urgent to adapt with it. Especially if you have kids, or care about their still developing judgments, behaviors and relationships.

So working with your kids, assisting them in developing critical thinking skills quickly, and how they share their info with their peers, is crucial.

If you don’t engage, Big Brother will do it for you! They already are contemplating it with the FTC being asked here in this report by the Wall Street Journal. http://blogs.wsj.com/tech-europe/2011/06/14/facial-recognition-is-here-to-stay/?mod=google_news_blog

Another question to ask Facebook – "What kind of government agencies will have access to this technology?"

Facebook themselves say here on their own website they will do it for you, engage, make it easy for you and keep your photos safe… if you trust them!

Here is Facebook's official statement: https://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=467145887130

In my opinion, now with so many more things public that we use to assume would be kept private, a better question is HOW our information is used, not the POSSESSION of the information anymore.

The person who’s picture is posted is the best one to determine whether his/her privacy has been violated. They are the ones who should be able to determine how much is too much! and…with 700 million users and 100 million photos a day being uploaded, it is safe to say we all like being connected. Also it’s urgent to say we must deal with it now, not later.

Even though face recognition is here to stay, do we really think it wise and prudent tp leave it to Facebook to protect our kids beautiful little faces, and their reputations?

Have you ever been poked by someone on Facebook? They are constantly developing new and fun ways to poke and prod people.

If you will engage with the smart tools that manage and track usage of this data, rather than ignore the innovations, you will eventually get the opportunity to apply them to other community activities and relationships.

In my next post, I will be talking about a smart tool technology, along with Facebook, that I used to bring together a large group of like-minded people from online to offline in just a few minutes! You won’t believe how much fun we all had, and I know you will have fun with it too! Pssssttt … some of them hate Facebook!
